PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:
Hello, I’m ExContinium.
I am an independent game developer. I enjoy sci-fi, fantastic stories, space, and chess. I develop games based on these interests.
TELL US ABOUT EXCOVERSE
The game I’m developing is an adventure role-playing game set in a fantastical world. The story revolves around gods and humans clashing, with our main character being a father who lost his daughter due to a catastrophe sent by the gods upon humanity.
He is now on a quest to find his daughter, facing various challenges and battles along the way. It’s an open world game and there is lots of area to explore and discover. lots of people to meet and problem to solve. The idea for this game came from my long-held desire to create a fantastical universe. There are few games that inspired me like, God of War, Zelda and Final Fantasy series.
HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN
This journey is long and demanding because I am developing an entire universe on my own. I have to handle many details and aspects such as gameplay mechanics, engine, graphics, sound, and music by myself.
WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
I decided that Unity3D is the best engine for this challenging journey because of its extensive Asset Store, which allows me to find solutions for assets that I can't create on my own. Additionally, Unity's multi-platform development capabilities lay the groundwork for the mobile version of my current game, Excoverse, which is part of my future plans.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?
The biggest hurdle I’ve faced is writing the story in a linear fashion without deviating from the main plot while creating a vast fantastical universe. A common issue for indie game developers is hitting a creative block midway through the project. This has been a challenge for me as well, but I believe I’ve overcome it. During such times, it can be helpful to take a break from the project, step back, and then return with a clear mind and fresh ideas.
ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?
My advice for those wanting to create their own games is to go ahead and build the universe and gameplay they desire without overthinking it. I’m sure many people have played games they loved and thought, “I wish this feature was different” or “They should have done this differently.” I had those thoughts too. What brought me to this point in game development was asking myself, “Why don’t I make my own game?” If you also want to start developing games, it’s not as difficult as it used to be. You can learn from the internet, YouTube, forums, or on your own. By setting goals and progressing towards them, success is inevitable.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?
Lastly, to my fellow game developers and to those who are deeply interested in this field, never stop developing and creating! Remember, no one reached the top in a single day. If there is failure, learn from it and move forward with more confidence and sure steps in future projects. This is the most rewarding peak an indie game developer can achieve. Good luck to everyone!
