PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:
Hi, I'm Ben Fowler - I worked on Scotty's Kindness Quest for Skewb Climate which was launched recently for free!
😊
I've been making games and interactive experiences for almost 10 years and I hope to keep creating to help bring joy to people's lives.
TELL US ABOUT KINDNESS QUEST.
Scotty's Kindness Quest started from a chance meeting at a trade show and that meeting has evolved into the finished product with a team of developers working to create the game with 4 core design pillars in mind.
They are Kindness, Action, Food Sustainability and History of Newcastle/the stottie. It follows Scotty the talking Stottie cake as he explores Newcastle helping out the people there and collecting ingredients to bake another stottie! It's a simple, easy game with basic controls created so that anyone can play it.
WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
We chose Unity for the development of the game due to its ease of use, flexibility with web (we targeting WebGL) and suitability for the game genre, which is simple point-and-click with some short minigames.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?
The biggest development hurdle was managing the scope of the project with a small team. Scope creep is one of the biggest issues faced by a lot of teams and every project seems to be a new lesson in managing it! We designed the game on the fly and had to adapt as work went on but it worked well in the end and the clients were very happy with the result.
ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?
If I had to give one piece of advice to people developing their own projects it would be to not give up! Game dev is hard, complex and takes more time than most people think but it is worth it if you persevere and keep learning every day. It is one of the most rewarding things to create since games can educate and bring joy to people so it is the fight worth fighting. Don't give up!
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?
