PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:
Hello everyone! We're Chibig, a small team (11 people right now) from Valencia, Spain, currently developing Mika and the Witch's Mountain, that will be out soon for Steam and consoles.
TELL US ABOUT MIKA.
Mika and the Witch's Mountain came after playing A Short Hike and the strong inspiration that all of our studio's games have from Studio Ghibli films, in this case, from Kiki's Delivery Service.
After defining the artwork and the core of the gameplay we came to what it is now: a story about a young witch (Mika) who works delivering packages while completing her training as a witch on a remote island full of nooks and crannies to explore.
HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN
The development of Mika has been full of very exciting moments and experiences from which we have learned a lot.
It started in 2022 as a joint development with another Spanish studio (Nukefist), although they are no longer involved in it. After that, we released a demo at the Steam Next Fest in February 2023 which was a great success (at least for us) with more than 25,000 downloads. In March 2023 we launched the Kickstarter campaign, which was the biggest surprise so far in the development, as we managed to raise 1.3M € and helped us to get thousands of people to discover the game.
WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
We're developing the game in Unity, like all our other games (except Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara).
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?
Probably the same that many other developers experience: not letting the development of the game extend too much, which implies having to put limits to the content you can develop and include.
Deciding how far your game has to go is very difficult, because creativity and enthusiasm lead you to want to add and improve even the smallest detail, but unfortunately resources are limited.
ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?
Don't worry too much about creating the 'big game' as about what you learn from each project. You'll never get 100% satisfied with a game, because there's always something that could be better, but you'll always learn great lessons from each one; and that's priceless.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?
-Hope will be helpful to someone! haha
