PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:

Hi! I'm Nikodem Lokatelj from Slovenia. I have been coding for the last 2 decades and have

started and abandoned many hobby game development projects over that time. Recently, I

decided to take a break from my full-time job to release some solo games. I have already

released one game on Steam called "A Walk With My Dog."

TELL US ABOUT TRIBE QUEST.

Tribe Quest is an action, survival, and crafting game where you complete quests for your tribe and improve your village. You will explore procedurally generated levels while fighting animals and fantasy creatures. The game also includes RPG elements such as character stats, perks, and item quality.

The game is inspired by old games like Lost Tribe and Oregon Trail, as well as modern ones like Binding of Isaac and FTL. Additionally, it's influenced by real-world prehistory, but I included fantasy elements to make it more interesting.

HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN

Overall, the development journey has been smooth, except for the inventory system, which is the most complicated game system I have ever developed. I have to constantly tweak or fix issues related to it.

WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

I chose Unity as the game engine because I have a lot of experience with it and wanted to focus

on making the game rather than learning a new engine or solving unexpected issues.

I have tried Unreal Engine for a gamejam and found that people with older PCs had difficulty

running the build.

While Godot could be a good alternative, I have used it before in a professional setting and was

bothered by some ui issues, bugs and incomplete C# implementation. It’s probably better now,

but I haven’t tried it in a while.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?

As a solo developer, motivating myself can be challenging, especially when something isn't working. It's hard to tell if the game will be fun until every important element is developed, so you spend a lot of time working without knowing if it will all come together in the end.

ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?

Make sure you have backups of all your projects. Use version control systems like Git, Plastic, or SVN. If nothing else, zip your projects regularly and upload them to Google Drive. You don't want to lose years of work.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?

Don't forget to live! Take care of your health, play games, and spend time with friends and family.
