PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:

Hi I’m Rhys, the solo developer at Nocturnal Interactive.

TELL US ABOUT SCARLET LAKE.

I am currently developing Scarlet Lake, a retro survival horror game that takes old school graphics and adds in modern mechanics. The game has a strong emphasis on narrative and engaging combat with its biggest influence being resident evil 4.

I have always loved survival horror and have a strong connection to games from the late 90’s early 2000’s. Recently there has been a resurgence of the survival horror genre with plenty of retro inspired games coming out. I wanted to add my own take of this sub genre and create the game that includes all of the mechanics that I would want as a player.

HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN

So far the development journey has been a blast, there is nothing that I love more than getting to work on my dream game. It has been a challenge developing as a solo dev because of the amount of various disciplines needed to develop the game.

WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

I feel confident in my ability as I am based on the unity engine which I have a wealth of knowledge in, this is why it has been my engine of choice for this game.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?

The biggest hurdle so far has been the marketing. Getting the game in front of the right audience has been a challenge when my time has mostly been dedicated to the development of the game.

ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?

Number 1: Make sure the game is a game that you would want to play.

Number 2: Don’t just create a game for the masses, instead make sure to focus on a specific sub genre.

Number 3: Don’t neglect marketing!

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?

Making games is a privilege so have fun with it and enjoy the journey.
