PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:

Hi! We are Fran and Nico, a duo passionate about video games, especially the survival horror genre. I’m Fran and I handle the art and pixel art, while Nico is our star programmer. We met on a video game forum and discovered that we both shared a passion for survival horror and pixel art. From this shared interest, our first project, Lamentum, was born.

TELL US ABOUT INANIMA

Sure, our new project is called INANIMA, and it's the natural evolution of what we did with Lamentum. If Lamentum was a love letter to classic survival horror, INANIMA is a tribute to more recent survival horror games like Resident Evil 4 and its current remakes. We wanted to create something different, blending elements such as survival horror, pixel art, religion, and retrofuturistic technology to offer a unique experience.

HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN

The development process has been quite complex. We decided to remake the game engine we used in Lamentum and redesign key aspects like combat and enemy AI.

WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

We chose to use Unity again, mainly because Nico has a lot of experience with this engine. Unity provides the flexibility and control we need to create the type of game we have in mind, especially to implement the combat system.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?

The biggest challenge has been finding a gun combat system that is fun and maintains the essence of survival horror. Additionally, adapting this system to a 2D pixel art environment has presented some extra challenges. Balancing gameplay and aesthetics has been quite a task, but we are happy with the final result.

ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?

Our advice is that it’s crucial to create a brand and know how to connect with your niche audience. Staying true to your vision and offering something unique is what really makes a difference in the industry.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?

Developing games is a challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see your ideas come to life. We believe that, especially in this difficult time for indie development, it’s more important than ever to stay true to your style.
