Our game is a cozy Japanese cooking game set in the heart of the spirit world! We had the idea for a cool farm to table pixel art game years ago when we first started learning game dev and it just didn't come together then 😂 but now my husband and I have built up our skills in our own areas and can finally make it!
The Japanese theme just came from our love of Japan and Japanese food, and the spirit world came from our love of Avatar the last Airbender - we wanted to make a place uncle iroh would be proud of.
it's our first game so there is definitely a learning process for the right work flow, etc.
We choose to stick with Unity since that's what my husband knows how to code in.
i think just the learning as we go. We are very chill people and thought we could figure out the full scope of certain gameplay elements as the game developed. While I still think it's important to be flexible, it probably would have been better for us to have fleshed out a few things more.
A lot of the issues come with having to re-write the code to fit things in that we wanted. Lighting was also a struggle and still something we are learning about.
Just realize how big a commitment it is, and/or be ok with it just taking the time it takes. There are certain event beats that are important ( lots in the summer, steam next Fest), but so is life balance. If you want to sacrifice a bit of that balance at times, that's ok too! Keep the scope small!! Especially for a first game. Make sure to be curious willing to learn as you go.
Don't beat yourself up if your on your 5th iteration of a character or 10th re-write of code. Playing games is also research 👀 even doing one little things is better than nothing. And make sure to get your game out there early! Start showing off the art, or animation, or mechanics. And get a steam page up as soon as possible.
I think that's it! 😉
