PLEASE START US OFF BY INTRODUCING YOURSELF:

Hey I’m Gilded. I’ve been making games for about 5 years. My background before that was in robotics and controls engineering. I got into games because I wanted to be able to work remotely. In that time I’ve worked professionally on all sorts of games from VR to educational.  I’ve also self published a number of indie games on http://itch.io.

TELL US ABOUT BRAMBLEWOOD

My game is called Bramblewood and it’s coming out later this year on Steam(so you know go wishlist it). It’s a cozy farming sim inspired game with a magical twist. In it you’re learning plant magic from a sorceress while solving problems for the local business owners.

I came up with idea because I wanted to try a making a genre I hadn’t gotten the chance to work on. So farming sim it was but I didn’t want it to be a clone so I put my own unique spin on it. It’s heavily magic casting focused but the magic is mostly about growing plants.

HOW HAS THE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY BEEN

The development journey has been a lesson in iteration and 3D modeling. I’ve rebuilt the entire project from scratch multiple times as my modeling skills have improved. There’s a very particular art style I’ve been aiming for that’s inspired by various anime particularly Howl’s Moving Castle. So every time I’ve rebuilt I’ve gotten closer to my goal.

WHICH GAME ENGINE DID YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

I’m using Unity because at the time I started the project it was the best engine for 3D stylized art.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT HURDLE SO FAR?

The biggest challenge in Bramblewood’s development has definitely been developing my 3D modeling skills especially when it comes to more organic forms. I’ve done most of the 3D modeling and art assets in it myself which is a big change from my previous games. It’s allowed me to do some really custom world building and design. The characters in particular are all various forms of fae and doing the 3D modeling has let me really make them unique.

ADVICE FOR FELLOW DEVS?

My advice for people doing their own game projects is to post your progress on social media. It’s one of the cheapest and most fun ways to build an audience for your game. It can also help you identify issues with your game before launch.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?

So if you like farming sims or magical RPGs or anime take a look at Bramblewood it might be your new favorite game.
