Hello! I'm swaggerpower42, I'm 18 years old and I'm an indie game developer working on my chaotic FPS peanut shooter NutShot. I like to make music, write, and of course, make video games.
So it started about 4 years ago when I was 14 I've been wanting to make games my whole life but I decided I would take the leap and officially start. For background I love fast paced movement FPS games,. At the time I needed a game name. I thought for a while I wanted something attention grabbing, then it hit me, NutShot. I came up with a logo added a white splatter and I thought it was the funniest thing ever. (still do)
The game development journey has been... Interesting! its not like I had game dev experience before I started making NutShot, this project WAS how I learned to be a game dev.
At first I started out with unity but I soon realized for my vision it wasn't going to be enough and I switched to Unreal engine 4 and I'd say that was a GREAT call. Unreal has a lot more support and resources for multiplayer plus their GameMode system is great!
Oh my gosh its multiplayer. It's not just a hurdle its the bane of my existence. Like the thing is, Unreal is probably the easiest game engine to do multiplayer in but as a newbie dev it was painful. Also Unreal's default movement component barely works with replicated games so I had to buy a $600 plugin that I got on sale for around $200 but now the movement is great so I'd say its worth it!
Don't give up, take a break if you need to. I'm going on 4+ years here and it might be another 4 before it gets released. If you put in time, effort, and love into your project players will recognize that. Make fun games.
You can do anything, seriously. Nothing is impossible. If you believe that you can do something and you work for it, you will find success.
